How this is calculatedThe exact formula, with a worked example you can check.
One standard lot of gold is 100 ounces. So when the gold price moves by $1, one lot gains or loses $100. A 0.01 lot (the smallest size) moves $1 for every $1 in price.
The formula
money at risk = balance × risk % ÷ 100 lots = money at risk ÷ (stop in $ × 100) tradeable lots = lots rounded DOWN to 0.01 each $1 move = lots × 100 loss at stop = lots × 100 × stop in $
Worked example
Example- 1Balance $5,000, risk 1%, stop $8.00
- 2Money at risk = 5,000 × 1 ÷ 100 = $50
- 3Lots = 50 ÷ (8 × 100) = 0.0625
- 4Round down: 0.06 lots. Stop hit = 0.06 × 100 × $8 = $48
- 5Each $1 move = 0.06 × 100 = $6
Some platforms use a different contract size for gold, so check your symbol details once.
Gold often moves most on US jobs (NFP) and inflation (CPI) days, so check the economic calendar first. For silver, oil and indices, use the lot size calculator. Lesson E2 of the Calm Doji course covers stops in points for gold.
