High, medium and low impact, in plain words
High impact
Can move prices a lot within seconds. Spreads often widen and prices can jump past a stop-loss.
Examples: US jobs report (NFP), US inflation (CPI), interest-rate decisions from the Fed, ECB or Bank of England.
Medium impact
Can move the currency involved for a while, usually less than high-impact news.
Examples: Retail sales, business surveys (PMI), GDP updates, speeches by central bankers.
Low impact
Rarely moves prices on its own. Useful background, safe to skim.
Examples: Smaller housing data, regional surveys, weekly figures.
Reading a row
Actual is the number just released, Forecast is what economists expected and Previous is the last release. On a phone they shorten to Act, Fcst and Prev. Prices usually react to the surprise: how far the actual lands from the forecast.
The small square next to the time shows the impact: red is high, yellow is medium, grey is low.

Around high-impact news
- The can widen and price can skip past your stop. That gap is called slippage.
- Many careful traders check the calendar before the day starts and stay out for a few minutes either side of high-impact news.
- Pair the calendar with the market hours clock to see which session the news falls in.
