How this is calculatedThe exact formula, with a worked example you can check.

Your risk comes from two things only: how many coins you hold and how far away your stop is. Leverage does not change that. It changes how much of your own money is locked as margin, and how close liquidation sits.

The formula

money at risk = balance × risk % ÷ 100 (or the fixed amount)
position size = money at risk ÷ |entry − stop|
position value = position size × entry
margin needed = position value ÷ leverage
risk : reward = |target − entry| ÷ |entry − stop|
rough liquidation distance ≈ 100% ÷ leverage

Worked example

Example
  1. 1Balance $1,000, risk 1%, BTC entry $64,000, stop $62,500, target $68,000, 5x
  2. 2Money at risk = 1,000 × 1 ÷ 100 = $10
  3. 3Position size = 10 ÷ 1,500 = 0.006666 BTC
  4. 4Position value = 0.006666 × 64,000 = $426.67
  5. 5Margin at 5x = 426.67 ÷ 5 = $85.33
  6. 6Risk : reward = 4,000 ÷ 1,500 = 1 : 2.67

The liquidation figure is a rough guide for isolated margin. Real exchanges also keep a maintenance margin and charge fees and funding, so liquidation comes a little sooner. Fees are not included here.

Lesson F1 of the Calm Doji course explains the 1% rule: survive first, grow second.

Questions

Does leverage change my risk?
